Caption: Dubai, 1973, satellite image. North is at top. Water is dark blue, desert is light brown. Dubai is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the Arabian Peninsula, within the Arabian Desert. It is one of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE was formed in 1971 after the British ceased to be its protector. Dubai Creek, (centre right) is an inlet used for shipping. This image shows the shape of the creek before it was dredged to allow the passage of large vessels. The population in Dubai began to increase rapidly in the early to mid 1970s after the discovery of reserves of oil. Since this time, Dubai has undergone major economic development and urbanisation. To compare subsequent images of Dubai, see: E780/1457 and E780/1458. This image was obtained on january 24th, 1973 by Landsat 7.
