Caption: Orchid flowers. This is the red helleborine orchid (Cephalanthera rubra). One of the petals (white and brown) of each flower is a specialised petal called a lip. This attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the soil). It is found in the temperate regions of Europe and Africa. This specimen is from the Dordogne region of France. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
