Caption: Frog orchid flower (Coeloglossum viride). The main part of the flower is at upper left, with a long petal extending downward to lower right. This long petal is a specialised structure called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in soil). It is found in temperate regions in Europe, Asia and North America. This specimen is from northern Wales. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
