Caption: Frog orchid flowers (Coeloglossum viride). Each of the flowers has an elongated petal, a specialised structure known as a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in soil). It is found in temperate regions in Europe, Asia and North America. This specimen is from northern Wales. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
