Caption: Orchid flowers (Coelogyne cristata). Each flower has a yellow/white petal (one seen on the flower at centre). This is a specialised structure called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). It is found in the mountains of the Himalayas and Java. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
