Caption: Orchid flowers (Coelogyne nitida). Each flower has a yellow-tinged petal. This is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). It is found in the mountains of India and South-East Asia. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
