Caption: Orchid flower (Coelogyne speciosa). The flower is not fully open. The brown and white structure is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees), though it sometimes grows on the ground as well. It is found in Malaysia and Indonesia. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
