Caption: Orchid flowers (Comperia comperiana). Each of the flowers has an pink/white petal with four trailing strands. This is a specialised petal known as a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in soil). It is found in temperate regions on some Greek islands, south of the Black Sea and in south through the Middle East to Iraq and Iran. This specimen is from the island of Lesbos. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
