Caption: Orchid flowers (Cymbidium tigrinum). The white and black-spotted structure is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is a lithophytic orchid (one that grows on rocks). It is found high in the mountains of the Himalayas and Burma. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
