Caption: Orchid flower (Cypripedium cordigerum). This is one of the slipper orchids, so-named for the white bulb-shaped part of the flower. This part of the flower is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts and can trap pollinators. This orchid is found high the Himalayas and mountains of northern Pakistan and Tibet. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in soil). This specimen is from the Himalayas. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
