Caption: Orchid flower (Cypripedium debile). This is one of the slipper orchids, so-named for the bulb-shaped part of the flower. This part of the flower is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts and can trap pollinators. This orchid is found in the temperate regions of China and Japan. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in soil). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
