Caption: Orchid flower (Cypripedium montana). This is one of the slipper orchids, so-named for the bulb- shaped part of the flower. It is commonly called the Mountain Lady's Slipper orchid. The 'slipper' part of the flower is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts and can trap pollinators. This orchid is found in cold and temperate regions of western North America. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in soil). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
