Caption: Kuwait City and its surrounding oil fields seen from space. This is the second of three images depicting the oil well fires in Kuwait in 1991. Here, in a Landsat image taken on 28 April 1991, the oil fields are ablaze. The red spots indicate burning oil wells, and a black pall of dense smoke is seen drifting toward the bottom right. The well fires appear concentrated in two areas, corresponding to the Al-Maqwa (top) and Al-Ahmadi oil fields. A few more isolated wells are seen burning at lower left. Over 600 oil wells were set alight by retreating Iraqi troops during the Gulf War earlier in 1991.
