Caption: Orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza foliosa). Close-up of part of the cluster of flowers produced by this orchid. The spotted petal of each flower is called the lip. This is a specialised petal to attract pollinators and provide them with a landing platform. This is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the soil), found on the Atlantic island of Madeira. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
