Caption: Common spotted orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza fuchsii). Close-up of the cluster of flowers that is produced by this orchid. The pink-tinged petal of each flower is called the lip. This is a specialised petal to attract pollinators and provide them with a landing platform. This is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the soil), found in bogs and meadows throughout Europe. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
