Caption: Dune orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza incarnata coccinea). The lower petal of each flower, called the lip, is a specialised petal that will attract pollinators and provide them with a landing platform. This is a subspecies of the early marsh orchid, and is found mostly on dunes. It is called a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the soil). The Dactylorhiza orchids are found in temperate regions of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
