Caption: Orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza majalis). Close-up of part of a cluster of these flowers. The patterned, lower petal of each flower is called the lip. It is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. The Dactylorhiza orchids are terrestrial orchids (ones that grow in the soil), found in bogs and meadows throughout Europe. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
