Caption: Orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza saccifera). Several flowers make up the cluster seen here. Two have opened (centre left and right) to expose a spotted petal called the lip. This is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found around the Mediterranean. The Dactylorhiza orchids grow in bogs and damp meadows, and are terrestrial orchids (ones that grow in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
