Smog over Italy from space. Smog (white) filling the heavily-industrialized Po River Valley across northern Italy. This view looks south-west to the Italy-France border, with the Mediterranean Sea at upper left. The Alps mountains curve down to lower right, providing a natural barrier for the smog to gather against. Switzerland is at centre and lower right, with Lake Geneva being covered by clouds (white, upper right edge). The dense smog, trapped under stagnant air or a temperature inversion, has even infiltrated the many Alpine mountain valleys. Photographed on 19 October 1997 during the NASA-6 mission to the Mir Space Station.
