Caption: Orchid flower (Dendrobium bifalce). The cup-shaped structure (lower left) is a specialised petal called a lip. It attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). It is found in the tropical regions of Papua New Guinea and Australia. This specimen is from Australia. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
