Caption: Acid rain damage to stonework. View of stonework on the walls of York Minster which have been damaged by acid rain. Clean rainwater will erode limestone and similar rocks which are used extensively in monumental masonry, but the effects normally take many years to become apparent. When the rainwater is polluted with sulphides and nitrogen oxides it becomes acidic, and erodes limestones, by dissolving them, much more quickly.
