Caption: Orchid flower (Epidendrum parkinsonianum, also known as Coilostylis parkinsoniana). The white structure is the lip. It is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower and provides them with somewhere to land. This is a large flower, growing to more than 15 centimetres across. This orchid is found in mountains in tropical Central America. It mostly grows on trees, when it is said to be an epiphytic orchid. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
