Caption: Orchid flowers (Epipactis palustris). The broad white structure at lower centre is the lip. This is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower and provides them with somewhere to land. This orchid is found throughout Europe's cold and temperate regions, in moors and marshes. It is commonly called the marsh helleborine. It is a terrestrial orchid (an orchid that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
