Caption: Calcium nanowires. Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of calcium nanowires (running top to bottom). The nanowires lie about 10 nanometres apart on a calcium fluoride crystal. Nanowires could be used for miniature electronics or for growing artificial tissue. The wires were scanned by moving a spring-loaded "stylus" over them. Magnification: x164,000 at 6x7cm size. x150,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
