Caption: Orchid flowers (Gymnadenia conopsea). Close-up of a flower as part of a cluster. The three-lobed petal at lower centre is the lip, a specialised structure that attracts pollinators to the flower and provides them with somewhere to land. This orchid is found in temperate and cold regions of Europe and Asia all the way east to Japan. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
