Caption: Kuwaiti oil field fires. A blazing oil slick in Kuwait, with a burning well head in the background. Over 600 oil wells in Kuwait were destroyed and set alight by retreating Iraqi troops during the 1991 Gulf War. Following the end of hostilities, crews from several firefighting companies set about the task of putting the fires out. The last fire was extinguished in December 1991, ten months after the end of the war. The smoke and oil from the fires caused immense environmental damage, having a profound impact both on local climate and ecosystem. This photograph was taken in July 1991.
