Caption: Calcium nanowires. Coloured two-dimensional autocorrelation image of calcium nanowires, based on an atomic force micrograph (AFM). The nanowires (faint diagonal lines) lie 10 nanometres apart on a horizontally-cleaved calcium fluoride crystal. Nanowires could be used for miniature electronics or for growing artificial tissue. The wires were scanned by moving a spring-loaded "stylus" over them. Magnification: x100,000 at 6x6cm size. x80,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
