Caption: Oil-covered seabirds. Birds often become poisoned by oil as they try to groom their feathers with their beaks. The oil also disrupts the insulation provided by their feathers, and many die as a result. These birds have been contaminated by the oil slick from the Torrey Canyon, one of the first supertankers. It was wrecked off the Cornish coast of Britain in 1967, polluting 150 kilometres of coastline in the first of the big oil spills.
