Caption: Sewage treatment reed-bed. These common reeds (Phragmites australis) are part of a self- contained treatment system that purifies the sewage from the village of Tongue, Scotland. The mixture of aerobic & anaerobic soil conditions that results, allows bacteria & fungi to flourish, which processes sewage and purifies water. The bed was planted with over 10,000 reeds in 1997. The cleaned water is then feed into an estuary.
