Caption: Air pollution experiment. Plant enclosure being checked during an experiment into the effects of elevated levels of carbon dioxide on plant growth. The grey tube seen next to the researcher connects to a device that controls carbon dioxide levels in the enclosure. Elevated carbon dioxide levels are thought to be a result of increased burning of fossil fuels since the industrial revolution. The levels are expected to rise further in the future. Research like this has indicated that plants bud earlier, are in leaf longer, and lose their leaves later, when carbon dioxide levels are increased. This site is at UMBS (University of Michigan Biological Station), USA.
