Caption: Car pollution research. Researcher monitoring the pollution produced by a diesel engine. The engine has been fitted with optical access ports (quartz windows, lower centre) to allow the pollutants to be observed as they are produced in the combustion chamber. Photographic and laser techniques are used to monitor the pollutants. Diesel engines use compression ignition, and are more efficient and produce lower amounts of gaseous pollutants than spark ignition engines. However, they produce more particulate pollutants. Studying the effects of different fuels and engines can help the design of cleaner, less polluting engines. This engine is a direct injection, common rail, diesel engine.
