This allows researchers to monitor pollution from the engine as it is produced in the combustion chamber. Photographic and laser techniques are used to monitor the pollution. This is a diesel engine. Diesel engines use compression ignition, are more efficient, and produce lower amounts of gaseous pollutants than spark ignition engines. However, they produce more particulate pollutants. Studying the effects of different fuels and engines can help the design of cleaner, less polluting engines. This engine is a non-direct injection, common rail, diesel engine.
