Caption: Studying diesel engine emissions. Researcher studying an exhaust pipe from a 1910 JTD common rail diesel engine for carbon particle and nitrogen oxide emissions. A quartz window (not seen) has been placed in the pipe to allow her to study the interior. Engines must comply with emissions standards before they can be installed in vehicles. Excess emissions can be harmful to health and the environment. Diesel engines rely on compression for the ignition of fuel, rather than using a spark plug. Diesel engines are more efficient than spark ignition engines, although they are heavier and the power output is typically lower.
