Caption: Orchid flower (Limodorum abortivum). The flowers of this orchid do not open fully in the cold and temperate climates where it grows. The protruding petal at lower right (white and dark pink) is the lip. This is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower and provides them with somewhere to land. This orchid is found in Europe, Turkey and northern Africa. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
