Caption: Orchid flower (Listera ovata). The long protruding petal (centre, two white spots) is a specialised structure called the lip. The lip helps attract pollinators to the flower and provides them with somewhere to land. The flower grows on a stem (at right) with many other flowers, forming a dense, elongated cluster. This orchid is found in Europe and Turkey. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
