Caption: Orchid flower (Masdevallia reichenbachiana), seen from the side. The cup-shaped flower is formed by three fused sepals that taper to the points seen here (upper left and centre right). This orchid grows in forests in the mountains of Costa Rica. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
