Caption: Orchid flower (Masdevallia vargasii). The three fused sepals (green, pointed) form a tube-shaped flower. Inside the tube are the petals. Only one of these is seen: the lip (yellow). The lip is a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower. The two red strips on the lip are called keels, and help in identifying this species. This orchid grows in forests in the mountains of South America. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
