Caption: Orchid flowers (Oeceoclades saundersiana). Each of the flowers has a large lower petal (different in shape and lighter in colour) called the lip. This attracts pollinators to the flowers. This orchid is found in tropical Africa, usually in riverine forests. This specimen is from Tanzania. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
