Caption: Orchid flower (Oncidium altissimum). The large brown petal is a specialised structure called the lip. It attracts pollinators to the reproductive parts (centre). This orchid is found in the Lesser Antilles islands in the West Indies. This specimen is from Martinique. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
