Caption: Orchid flower (Oncidium tigrinum). The extremely large yellow petal is a specialised structure called the lip. It attracts pollinators to the nearby reproductive parts. The patterns on the other petals and sepals give this orchid its other name of the Tiger-striped Oncidium. This orchid is found in the Americas from Mexico to Peru, growing at high altitudes. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
