Caption: Reconstruction of the Arles basilica. Computer model showing the location of a pavement (centre) and mosaic (centre right) in the early Christian basilica discovered in Arles, France. Magnified views of the pavement and mosaic are shown at lower left and lower right. This semi-circular area is the stage area of the amphitheatre part of the basilica complex. This basilica, thought to be one of the first cathedrals in what was then Gaul, was discovered in 2003. The remains date from the 4th century, when the Roman Empire had adopted Christianity as its official religion.
