Caption: Egyptian papyrus conservation. Ancient Egyptian papyrus scroll being conserved at the Laboratory of Papyrology at the Egyptian Museum of Cairo, Egypt. This laboratory, opened in 2005, is a joint effort between papyrus experts in Italy and Egypt. Training is given in conservation techniques, allowing preservation and reproduction of the thousands of papyrus scrolls kept at this museum. Papyrus was used for written records by many ancient civilisations, including the Greeks and the Romans, and is thought to have been first used in Ancient Egypt. The oldest surviving papyrus scrolls are over two thousand years old.
