Caption: Ice maiden mummy. Also known as the 'Altai Princess' or 'Ukok Princess', this woman's mummified body was found frozen in her burial mound (kurgan) in Siberia in 1993. She was found on the Ukok Plateau, high in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia. The skin and some hair remains intact, and tattoos can be seen on the shoulder. Thought to be 2500 years old, she was found buried with horses and many artefacts. She was from the Pazyryk people, a Scythian culture. The Scythians were a nomadic European people who inhabited a wide region of steppes extending from present-day Ukraine eastwards into Central Asia.
