Caption: Scythian gold ornament. Details of animals depicted on a gold chest ornament found during archaeological excavations in the Ukraine. The ornament was produced by the Scythian culture, and dates from the 4th century BC. The Scythians were a nomadic European people that inhabited the steppes north of the Black Sea and westwards to Central Asia. This gold ornament was found in the Tolstaya Mogila burial mound, which was excavated in 1971, and is now displayed in the collection of the Ukrainian Museum of Historical Jewellery. The animals depicted here are a horse, a bull, a dog and a pig. Two men are depicted at far left and right.
