Caption: Pale orchid flower (Ophrys pallida). This is one of the bee orchids, so named for the distinctively shaped lip (part of the flower, here white/brown) that often looks like bees or other insects. The lip is a specialised petal that helps to attract pollinators. This orchid is found mostly in parts of northern Africa, but also in parts of southern Europe. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers. Photographed in Sicily, Italy.
