Caption: Orchid flowers (Orchis galilea). The large petal (with four lobes) on each flower is a specialised structure called a lip. This attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. The Orchis orchids are found in temperate regions of Europe and Asia. They are terrestrial orchids (ones that grow in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
