Caption: Orchid flower (Orchis italica). The large petal of this flower looks like a human, hence the other name for this orchid: naked man orchid. The large petal is a specialised structure called the lip. This attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found throughout the Mediterranean region. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers. Photographed in Cyprus.
