Caption: Roman amphitheatre at El Djem in Tunisia. The three tiers of arches rise 36 metres above the ground. Spectacles of gladiators fighting against each other and against wild animals were staged here. It is the third largest amphitheatre of the Roman world, having a capacity of between 30,000 and 45,000 people. It was built in the second century AD. El Djem (also known as El Jem) was the ancient city of Thysdrus.
