Caption: Military orchid flowers (Orchis militaris). One of the petals (white and pink) of each flower is a specialised structure called a lip (here, long and forked with pink spots). The rest of the flower is shaped like a helmet, and this orchid is sometimes called the helmet orchid. The lip helps to attract pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in most of Europe. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
