Caption: Orchid flower (Orchis prisca). The large petal at lower centre (pink spots on white) is called the lip. It is a specialised structure that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. The Orchis orchids are found in the temperate regions of Europe and Asia. They are terrestrial orchids (they grow in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
